Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, seeking to shore up support from powerful Roman Catholic bishops, on Saturday signed a law abolishing the death penalty before her imminent visit to the Vatican.
The new law offers a reprieve for more than 1,200 convicts on death row who faced lethal injection.

How bad can it be that these folks seek the support of the local bishops' conference on a matter of this importance, eh? Now if we could only get war enthusiasts of the Neuhaus stripe to sign up with the Church on pre-emption, "collateral damage", torture and the like and take the love of God seriously we'd have a home run. Not likely though, Neuhaus, Novak and Company seem too enamoured of their "German Church" connections with Goering look-alike, Karl Rove. One wonders if they plan to encourage Bush Administration support for further ethnic cleansing on the West Bank. God knows they're close enough to the Chuck Colsons, Gary Bauers, and John Hagees.
