The earlier missionaries who journeyed to Thailand have died or returned to the U.S. The remaining missionaries are well past 60, and there are few priests to replace them.
Figures showed that in the 1960s, religious priests from America who became missionaries numbered 3,018, but that figure fell to 1,840 in 2003.
Maier recognized that.
The years he spent living with the poor showed on his face. He bowed his head in contemplation when considering the future of the center he founded.
Then, he spoke up.
"The teachings of Jesus Christ will live on," he said.
We had more than a few good men.
