Some Catholic scholars said the real issue was the church's fixation on celibacy. Daniel Maguire, a professor of moral theology at Marquette, a Jesuit university in Wisconsin, described celibacy as a "failed experiment in human control...it's highly unrealistic," he said. - Reuters

Professor Maguire has been prescient in recognizing the flaws in Church teaching, judging from some of his prior work:
"Recent books: Sacred Rights: The Case for Contraception and Abortion in World Religions, (Oxford University Press, 2003); and Sacred Energies: When the World's Religions Sit Down to Talk about the Future of Human Life and the Plight of this Planet, (Fortress Press, 2000). He is also the author of some 200 articles in professional journals and magazines, including Theological Studies, Cross Currents, Atlantic, The New York Times, Crisis: Journal of the NAACP, and Ms. Magazine."

It appears also that CUA's "loss" was Marquette's "gain." Check out a good posting here:

Thanks for the info. Poor Marquette. I see how you have to dig a little deeper sometimes.
